Bridgewater High gives a helping hand to inspire young chemists

This Saturday Bridgewater High School will be hosting the regional heat of a

national competition for students from schools north of the Mersey who

aspire to be the next generation of chemists.

The annual competition ‘Top of the Bench’ is organised by the Royal Society

of Chemistry (RSC). It aims to stretch the brightest and most able young

chemists aged between 14 and 16 from schools in the area.  In teams of four

they will be tested through a lab task, an hour exam and a poster

presentation.

This year the poster’s subject is linked to the topic of the International Year of

Chemistry 2011, “Water”.

Bridgewater High School Head teacher Tim Long said: “I’m very pleased that

the school has been selected to host this exciting competition. I sincerely

hope that the schools that attend Bridgewater High School on the day will

feel welcome and I’d like to wish them all good luck.”

The overall winner of the regional competition will be announced at the end

of Saturday 10 December and that school will represent the Liverpool

section at the national final, which will take place on 31 March 2012 at the

Imperial College London.
