Electoral fraud refers to specific offences under electoral law. These can include making false statements about the personal character of a candidate, offering an incentive to influence how someone votes or whether they vote at all, and interfering with postal votes.

Offences may also involve submitting false information or signatures on nomination forms, registering to vote under a false name or without someone’s consent, influencing someone to vote against their will, or pretending to be someone else and using their vote.

Electoral fraud undermines the democratic process and is a serious offence. Those found guilty can face significant penalties, including imprisonment.

Anyone with concerns about electoral fraud is encouraged to report them to the police. Anonymous reports can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their online form: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/forms/give-information-anonymously

The Electoral Commission, the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK, works closely with Walsall’s Electoral Registration Officer and Returning Officer. It provides guidance and support to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place with local police forces to respond to allegations of electoral fraud. The Commission also works with the National Police Chiefs’ Council to support police forces in this area.

The Electoral Commission’s ‘Your vote is yours alone’ campaign aims to help voters understand the different types of electoral fraud and how to protect their vote, whether voting in person or by post. The campaign forms part of a wider programme of work, alongside Crimestoppers and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, to raise awareness and support secure and transparent elections.

A range of campaign resources, including videos, posters and leaflets, are available in multiple languages such as English, Urdu, Bengali and Punjabi. These can be accessed and downloaded via the Electoral Commission website: https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/resources/democratic-engagement-resources/electoral-fraud-resources-your-vote-yours-alone
