YMCA Open Door Host Chronicles - Kerry's Host Story

This is Kerry, one of our lovely Dudley Hosts. We caught up with her to find out why she does what she does.

How long have you been a host, Kerry?
I became a Host at 6 pm on 3 September 2014, which is when my first Young Person arrived at my door!

What made you become a Host?

I decided to become a Host because I believe that everyone deserves to live in a warm, safe environment with people who care about them. By being a Host you are giving a Young Person stability, the experience of family life, an opportunity to learn the life skills they will need for independent living and, most importantly, a place to call home. It took a while for me to make the initial phone call to YMCA - 18 months from when I first saw the poster at work - but I'm so glad I did.

What's the best thing about Hosting?

The things I enjoy most about being a Host are seeing a Young Person grow in confidence and self-esteem and learning new skills. I also love doing activities with the Young Person e.g. cinema, bowling, shopping, eating out, theatre, cooking, chatting and watching TV. It can be great fun.

What would you say to someone who's thinking of Hosting?

I would definitely encourage other people to become Hosts. It can be challenging and stressful and each time a new Young Person arrives you are taking on the unknown. However, it is very rewarding and the support you get from the staff at YMCA Open Door is outstanding.
