Walsall is asking; what is Reiki?

So from the top as it were, what is Reiki?

'Reiki is an invisible, gentle energy that works by balancing an individual’s energy systems; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, and in that way promotes the body’s own natural ability to heal. It is a non-invasive therapy which aims to treat holistically and to restore homeostasis (whole-body balance)."

We as Reiki practioners work on the assumption that the universe has a healing force, available to those able to access it, which when it flows through a willing 'channel' can assist the recipients own healing process. We also believe that everyone has the ability to heal themselves but often our ability to access this healing is blocked by our beliefs, fears, stress (to heal we must be open and relaxed) or by energy blockages in our body or mind. This may sound very spiritual, and indeed Reiki is, but it's also scientific, up to 80 of all healing is placebo and placebo is just another way of saying self-healing. A recent Horizon episode on the BBC highlighted that fact that science doesn't know how this works but it does, and little things like the right therapist and some time being listened to make a huge difference to recovery rates even where no other treatment is used.

During a Reiki Treatment you will relax fully clothed, on a comfortable couch with pillows and cushions as required, and listen to soft music while the therapist places their hands (usually over a blanket) on specific points on your head and body silently and channels the healing.

Reiki was developed in Japan by a gentleman who created system for accessing and channelling this healing energy and making it available to others, he set up clinics across Japan and in time word spread and so did Reiki practice. The word is made up of two words " rei meaning “Universal Spirit and ki meaning “life force energy,” the combined word has the meaning of cosmic or sacred universal energy or life force. Reiki is an ancient hands-on healing technique that claims the power to use this force to heal, by balancing the subtle energies within our bodies."

Reiki style by other names has certainly been practiced in other cultures, what's special about Reiki specifically is that it has been systematically thought and made widely available. At Walsall Mind and Body, we practice Reiki and it's available as a therapy here and proves very popular and very successful, it's also available as courses enabling those who wish to begin to practice on themselves and develop their own abilities to channel Reiki for the benefit of others.

Reiki energy has several basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, assists in the release of energy blockages, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body to provide new vitality.

The Reiki practitioner, who has been initiated and trained to become attuned to this healing energy, serves as a channel to direct those energies to where they are needed. Reiki flows from the practitioner’s body through the palms of the hands to the recipient’s body.

To some extent Reiki is a philosophy or spiritual practice but it is not religion or a part of any specific doctrine, it's all about the healing! The principles of Reiki recommend a design for living in balance with all others and with nature are as follows:

Just for today I will not be angry.

Just for today I will not worry.

Earn your living honestly.

Honor your parents, teachers and elders.

Show gratitude to every living thing.

Because the study and practice of Reiki encourages personal or spiritual development, this in turn helps us to heal ourselves and others. We find that both giving and receiving Reiki is a profound and empowering experience leading to relaxation and a calm, peaceful sense of well-being on all levels. As stress and illness are linked, Reiki is often used to alleviate the anxiety that accompanies mmedical conditions conditions.
