The event was hosted by the Mayor of Walsall and began with a welcome speech thanking volunteers for their dedication and ongoing support.
The remainder of the evening provided an opportunity for informal networking and refreshments, allowing volunteers to meet face-to-face, many for the first time, having previously connected through community groups and social media.
The celebration followed Walsall’s most successful year yet for volunteer litter picking. Throughout 2025, volunteers collected an impressive 20,780 bags of litter, a significant increase on the previous total of 13,854. This was achieved through more than 10,800 volunteer hours, reflecting growing community pride and commitment across the borough.
Walsall’s approach to litter picking has received national recognition, with the borough shortlisted for the Keep Britain Tidy Volunteer Engagement Award 2026, celebrating the impact and commitment of residents who give their time to improve their neighbourhoods.
“ Our volunteers continue to set the standard for what community action can achieve and I felt it was only right we arrange a formal event to celebrate all the work they do. The collection figures are a testament to their dedication, passion, and the pride they have in Walsall.
Councillor Suky Samra, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene
“Whether it’s individuals, school groups or businesses, our volunteer network is growing stronger every year, and the impact they’re making can be seen across every part of the borough. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do. “
