Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Fundraising Team was invited by Ray Dale, who runs the Supporters Club, to help man its collection point at the Poundland Bescot Stadium before this afternoon’s clash with Tranmere Rovers where a bumper haul of donations for children and young people in the Manor Hospital are donated every year.

Ben Boycott, Walsall FC Co Chairman, said: “The club is a pretty central part of the community and it’s not just about football, it’s about giving back.

“The supporters are the football club and we want to work to give back to the town as a whole.”

John Hill, 54, has been a Saddlers fan since 1969.

He said about the Christmas Toy Appeal: “ It’s something I always do. And I feel so sorry for kids who might not get much at Christmas.”

Laura Brittain, Senior Sister from Ward 21 Children’s Ward, joined Fundraising Manager Georgie Westley and Fundraising Support Officer Kimberley Aplin to thank everyone who supported the appeal which will see toys distributed via the Trust’s Well Wishers charity.

Laura said: “Today is really important and it’s so nice that the community comes together to support us. It’s great to see so many people are so generous – it cheers up the children and delivers that Christmas magic. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated.”

Georgie, who was also accompanied by the charity’s Humphrey bear mascot,  thanked everyone involved, and particularly Ray for inviting the charity.

“No-one wants to be in hospital at Christmas and this generous gesture from Walsall FC’s supporters will definitely cheer up our young patients,” she said. “Whatever the results are over the next few weeks – Walsall FC is a winner in our eyes.”

And Humphrey the bear must be a lucky charm as The Saddlers beat Tranmere Rovers 1-0!
