It has been revealed that over the last decade the road traffic accident rate in England has fallen by almost a third; helped significantly by improved in-car technology.

Official Department of Transport figures have revealed that during 2001 the number of road traffic accidents in England was 229,000; yet last year this had fallen to 146,000.

It has been suggested that enhanced in-car technology is a contributing factor for reducing traffic accidents, with reports suggesting that technology which enables better handling of the vehicle entering a bend reducing accidents by 25 percent.

Other factors cited for reducing the number of road accidents over the last ten years include improved road surfaces and driver visibility.

In addition to revealing that the number of traffic accidents has fallen, figures for the same period have also highlighted that the West Midlands and North West saw a drop of almost half in road accidents; whilst London and the South East continue to see higher than average number of traffic accidents.
