Top tips to stay gas safe

  • Check for warning signs that your appliances are not working correctly, e.g lazy yellow flames, black marks or stains around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.

 

  • Remember the six main signs and symptons of carbon monoxide poisoning:
    • Headaches
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Breathlessness
    • Collapse
    • Loss of conciousness

If these symptoms disappear or become less noticeable when away from the home this can be a sign that carbon monoxide is present.

 

  • Carbon monoxide can kill, fit an audible alarm certitified and marked EN50291 BS Kitemark (cost around £20).

 

  • Get gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year.

 

  • Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and service your appliance.

 

  • Check the engineers Gas Safe registered ID card and check the engineer is qualified to work on that appliance (back of their ID card), if in doubt call Gas Safe 0800 408 5500.

 

  • In an emergency , if you smell gas you must:
    • Never light a naked flame/smoke
    • Never turn on any electrical appliances
    • Always open doors and windows
    • Always keep people away from the affected area
    • Turn off the gas meter at the control value
