Get your home sparkling clean with this definitive list of top cleaning tips and tricks.

  • Do you have pets? Eliminate pet hair by putting on a wet rubber glove and wipe your hand over surfaces where cat hair clings to the most. The hair will stick right to it
  • Don't get caught out the next time you have friends over and somebody accidentally spills red wine on your carpet. A dab of foaming shaving cream can help remove red wine spills.
  • If you have tupperware that is starting to smell like the food that was in them, wash them with hat water and two tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Lint rollers can be used on cloth lamp shades to lift dust, as often vacuum attachments won't work.
  • If you haven't got enough time to clean your bathroom properly; baby wipes are useful for quick surface cleanups in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Removing stubborn price tags from crockery or glasswear, use a cotton pad soaked with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will dissolve the sticky glue quicker than scrubbing and picking at it.
  • Get your windows and mirrors sparkling clean by using old newspaper to clean instead of kitchen roll. It works great and also you're recycling.
  • If you have discoloured china such as teacups and teapots, make a paste of baking soda and water. It's gentle enough for most fine china, and it's easy on the hands and the wallet too.
  • When you're washing narrow-necked glass vases and decanters, add a little uncooked rice to water. This will leave your glassware sparkling clean.
