Salt of the roads – Walsall stocked up for Winter season

Around 2,800 tonnes of salt has been stocked – enough to cover up to 48 full gritting runs if conditions require it.

Walsall Council grits around 41% of the borough’s roads, including priority routes such as main roads, bus routes and access routes to hospitals. Decisions to send out the gritters are made daily and are informed by road surface temperature, localised weather forecasts and weather station data.

“ We’re fully prepared for whatever winter throws at us. Our crews work around the clock when icy conditions arrive, treating priority routes to help keep people safe on the roads.

With 2,800 tonnes of salt in store, we’re in a strong position to deal with cold snaps right through to spring. I’d also like to thank our highways teams in advance for the vital work they do each winter to keep Walsall moving. “

Councillor Suky Samra, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene

Grit bins across the borough are currently being refilled. These bins are usually located on steep roads or at challenging junctions and are topped up as required. You can make a request for a grit bin to be topped up or repaired at Report | Walsall Council

Requests for new grit bins can be made at trafficmanagement@walsall.gov.uk. All requests will be reviewed in line with the criteria set out in the Winter Service Operational Plan.

Gritting usually takes place overnight to minimise disruption, though crews can also be called out during the day if conditions change. Residents are advised to take extra care on the roads during winter, particularly on untreated surfaces.
