Professor Gatrad OBE receives the prestigious David Middleton Sustainability Award

At the regional conference on sustainability held by Climate Change solutions Prof Gatrad was awarded the first David Middleton Award for his unique work through WASUP – World Against Single Use Plastic. It was a huge conference at the Tally Ho in Birmingham with a few hundred from universities corporates and councils present.

Prof Gatrad was awarded this for ‘founding WASUP’ and in 4 years, through his unique leadership,  expounding its 4 principles not only here in the UK but also globally in 15 countries. WASUP has 4 Principles which have brought together people of all communities to fight against a common enemy in plastic:

  1. Raise awareness in all sectors of the community (schools, businesses, places of worship etc) thorough talks events and the social media
  2. Educate the children in schools about the dangers of plastic and teach them about recycling
  3. Litter picking both in streets and the waterways by all sectors of the community.
  4. Putting pressure on manufacturers to use less plastic in their packaging or in some cases none.

This conference aimed to support businesses as they contribute to tackling the climate crisis, was held in Birmingham on the 29th September. It showcased some of the great work that is already taking place by organisations across a range of sectors.

This annual conference is now names after David Middleton, a tireless campaigner on sustainability for over 25 years and previous event organizer, who sadly passed away last year. Jacqui Staunton from Climate Change Solutions said “This conference is great way for us to share best practice with those across different sectors and discover how other organisations are measuring, managing, and reducing their environmental impact.”

The event also raised £5000 for WaterAid who work to deliver clean water to the most vulnerable.
