Patients who need emergency care for surgical conditions will now be treated in a relocated specialist unit at Walsall Manor Hospital which provides a more pleasant environment.
The Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit (SACU) will be run from Ward 9 of the hospital from next Monday 19 May. It was originally housed nearer to Maternity Services.
The unit provides same day assessment, diagnosis and treatment for surgical patients with a range of conditions including abdominal issues and urological concerns and can often help patients avoid hospital admissions.
Mindy Dawes, Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “SACU is aimed at delivering efficient emergency care for various surgical conditions.
Referrals come from the hospital’s Emergency Department, Urgent Treatment Centre, or GPs as well as via care navigation in the community which helps patients find the right support and services at the right time.
“The SACU is relocating to Ward 9 which is an airier and more spacious environment for our patients that will help to improve their experience of the service. It houses two assessment rooms.
“Prompt same-day assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for surgical patients can often avoid the need for an overnight hospital admission. This move is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing patient care and improving service efficiency.
“It is anticipated that the relocation will allow us to provide a faster assessment for patients who are able to return home, or to have the decision for admission sooner. Patients scheduled for appointments or procedures will receive individual updates to ensure continuity of care.
“While there may be some slight disruption in streaming patients on the morning of the move we will make every effort to keep this to a minimum and thank people for their patience.”
