The improvements are being led by the Merrions Wood Trustees in partnership with Walsall Council and follow discussions held during 2024, which marked 100 years since the woodland was placed in trust for public use.

“ 2024 marked an important milestone as we celebrated 100 years of Merrions Wood being held in trust for public use. It gave us an opportunity to reflect on the woodland’s history and, importantly, look ahead to its future. The new entrance signs are the first visible part of a much wider programme of work. Our ambition is to ensure Merrions Wood continues to be a place where people can walk, relax, enjoy nature and discover its wildlife for generations to come.

Working towards restoring Green Flag status is an important ambition, and I look forward to seeing the improvements develop over the coming years.

As part of the centenary, a plan was commissioned from ecological, landscape and arboricultural specialists to identify opportunities to improve the woodland, protect its unique character and enhance the visitor experience.

The woodland is designated as a Local Nature Reserve and a site of Importance for Nature Conservation. It contains mature oak and beech woodland and provides important habitats for a wide range of wildlife.

The work to improve Merrions Wood will continue as the Trustees, the Friends’ of Merrions Wood Group, and partners work towards securing its long-term future and maintaining the woodland as a place for people and wildlife.
