National Walking Month is an annual campaign that encourages people of all ages and abilities to incorporate more walking into their everyday routines. Walking is a low‑cost activity that can be accessed close to home and forms part of wider public health guidance on staying physically active.
A range of walking opportunities are available across the borough, focusing on everyday walking, scenic routes, walking for health and active travel.
The council’s parks, countryside and nature reserves provide opportunities for residents to walk as part of their daily routines. In addition, Walsall Healthy Spaces hosts regular walking groups to support with health and wellbeing such as Walsall Walk On and Nordic walking.
For those who enjoy nature and walking, the canals in Walsall are part of a wider network of routes connecting the town centre to surrounding areas of countryside.
Walking can also be used for short local journeys to destinations such as shops, schools, libraries and leisure facilities, helping to reduce reliance on cars where appropriate.
“ Walking is a simple, accessible way to include physical activity in everyday life. Many people can do this close to home, whether that is by visiting the nearest park for leisure or swapping short car journeys for walking instead. Please do take the time to find out about what’s available to you and consider walking as one of many ways of being active. “
