The origins of Mothers Day are unclear, although celebrations or festivals for mothers have been recorded since the 16th century. During the middle ages the fourth Sunday of Lent gradually became Mothering Sunday but it is believed the day we now know as "Mothers Day" started in America in the 20th century where it is celebrated in May with a National Holiday.
In this country, Mothering Sunday can fall no earlier that 1st March and no later than 4th April. For most card and gift shops it is one of the busiest times of the year, second only to Christmas. Mothers Day 2011 falls on Sunday 3rd April.
