How to make New Years Resolutions - and stick to them

As we round up 2015, you may be starting to set yourself New Year's resolutions for 2016. A new year gives us the opportunity to make changes in our lives. However so often we don't stick to our resolutions and find ourselves in the same rut as were last year.

Before you buy yourself some new gym kit that may end up sitting at the back of your wardrobe, here are some tips on how to stick to your resolutions.

  1. Think About Last Year - Reflecting on the mistakes and mishaps of the previous year is a good place to start when it comes to making New Year's resolutions. Where could you have done better? What do you want to change? Don't beat yourself up about it, just take your weak points and see what you can do about them this year.
  2. Write it Down - Use a planner or a calendar to write down your goals and transfer your thought to paper. Whether it's typed out or written down on a piece of paper, put your list somewhere where you can seei t and refer to it often.
  3. Don't Try to Do It All in January - Don't try to cram all of your goals into the first 31 days of 2016, if your goals are worth attaining they will take time. Plus the effort and energy it will take to accomplish those resolutions is too much to do all at once.
  4. Accept Failure - If you do give in to a cigarette, have a slice of chocolate cake or miss going to the gym, don't hate yourself for it. Make a note of the triggers that caused this set back and learn a lesson from them. Perseverance is key to sucess. Try again if you fall off the wagon, and keep trying
  5. Plan Rewards - Small rewards are a great encouragement to keep you going during the hardest first days. Rewards can include buying a magazine, a trip to the cinema or whatever makes you tick.
