Outstanding individuals whose efforts make a real difference to other people’s lives will be honoured at the eleventh Mayor of Walsall’s Civic Awards.
The awards ceremony, affectionately known as The Doras, is being held at Walsall's Town Hall on Friday 20 March 2015.
It aims to recognise unsung heroes who work tirelessly to help others and Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Pete Smith, will honour locals who are working to improve the lives of others in the borough and make people proud of Walsall.
Councillor Smith said: “The Civic Awards are a very special date in the Mayoral calendar and I am looking forward to meeting these inspirational people who have such a positive impact upon their communities, working to make Walsall a better place.
“They often go about their work with little or no recognition and the Civic Awards gives them the recognition and appreciation they deserve - this night will belong to them."
“If you know someone who deserves to be recognised because they’ve gone that extra mile for their community then we want to hear from you.”
Anyone of any age can be nominated for an award, as long as they live or work in the borough.
Last year’s winners included Gill Beasley who won an award for her tireless work raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Following the untimely death of her daughter 17 years ago, Gill has worked to promote the essential service Macmillan Cancer Support gives the Walsall community. She has established her own group and with her fundraising committee, organised countless events raising over £500,000.
Wendy Terry, a school crossing patrol warden since 1997, one hundred voluntary Street Champions and PC Darren Robbins who founded a fishing academy for young people were also amongst last year’s seven winners and fourteen runners-up.
The closing date for nominations is Friday 12 December 2014.
