Walsall writer Ranjit Singh McRae has a new book out with England Publishing Co - and it will be ready to hit the shelves in a few months.   

It begins in a small rural village in Punjab, North India, where family, honour, hard work and respect were not taught in classrooms but lived every day. Those early years shaped the values that guided my entire life.  

As a young boy arriving in Britain during the early 1960s, I entered a completely different world. Like many first-generation immigrants, I faced cultural change, uncertainty and the challenge of building a future from very modest beginnings. Education became my pathway, determination my companion, and perseverance my greatest strength.  

Long before international travel became commonplace, I made a promise, to my father, to family, to friends, and perhaps most importantly to myself, that one day I would travel overland from Britain back to my birthplace in North India. It was more than an adventure. It became a test of character.  

That journey represented ambition, courage, honour and the determination to keep one’s word despite every obstacle.   Throughout my life I discovered that the greatest forms of love are rarely spoken loudly. They are demonstrated quietly through responsibility, sacrifice, loyalty and consistency.  

Silent love needs no grand declarations. It is found in quiet moments, gentle embraces, unwavering loyalty and the comfort of simply being there. Some of life’s greatest loves are never loudly spoken,  they are quietly lived.  

Those values became the foundation of my family life, my teaching career, my business ventures and my commitment to public service. They also sustained me through disappointment, betrayal and the long pursuit of justice.  

The title Deception by Trust reflects one of life’s greatest contradictions. We build our lives by trusting others, yet sometimes that very trust becomes the source of our deepest betrayals. Rather than allowing those experiences to define me, they became lessons in resilience, wisdom and personal growth.  

This memoir spans more than seven decades. It is the story of migration, education, travel, entrepreneurship, family, friendship, success, loss, injustice and perseverance. It is also a record of changing Britain, changing Punjab, and the changing values of society itself.   Above all, this is a story about keeping one’s promises.   I have never sought perfection. I have simply tried to live honourably, work honestly, think independently and remain true to the values passed to me by my father, my grandfather and my ancestors.  

If, through this life, I have made them proud, then I consider that my greatest achievement.  

This book is my legacy to future generations.   It is written not only to remember the past, but to encourage others to dream boldly, work diligently, honour their word and never surrender their integrity.
