Social Work Week is a campaign which started on World Social Work Day (Tuesday 17 March 2026) and highlights the dedication, compassion and expertise of social work professionals. whilst raising awareness of the important services available to Walsall residents who need support.
This year’s international campaign theme, “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” reflects the important role social workers play in bringing communities together, supporting people through challenges, and helping build a more inclusive society.
The theme draws on the concept of “Harambee,” which means “pulling together”, highlighting the importance of collaboration, solidarity and shared responsibility when supporting communities.
Throughout the week, Walsall Council will highlight the wide range of services available to residents and recognise the impact social workers have in helping people live safe, independent and fulfilling lives.
As part of the wider celebrations, one Walsall Council social worker, Heather Gillion will also contribute to a national learning event hosted by Social Work England, titled “Transforming Social Work with People Aged 65+.” The online session, which takes place on Wednesday 18 March 2026, will bring together professionals from across the sector to explore how social work practice can better support older people and promote independence and wellbeing in later life.
“ World Social Work Day is an opportunity to recognise the dedication, professionalism and compassion of social workers across Walsall. Every day they work alongside residents, families and communities to help people overcome challenges, maintain independence and build stronger futures.
Councillor Keir Pedley, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care
“It is also fantastic to see the expertise of our workforce recognised nationally, with one of our social workers contributing to a professional learning event focused on improving support for older people. “
