5 Interesting facts about blinds and curtains

Ever wondered where the blind and curtain came from and the history they have? Well as no more as we have the answers:

  1. The romans got tired and fed up of dust and debris getting blown into their homes, their simple solution was to hang damp cloth over their windows; thus the first Roman Blinds were born.

  2. Some of the earliest known blinds are derived from evidence of the ancient Chinese’. Blinds were created by binding bamboo together, and hanging them in doorways and windows to create privacy.

  3. The Tilt Mechanism found in nearly all hanging blinds today was first patented by American inventor John Hampson. We should all give Mr Hampson a thank you for a job well done.

  4. A portrait painter to Queen Elizabeth is said to have once spotted a book of swatches laying around Buckingham Palace, on questioning this, the Queen stated that she could do with a hand picking the colour scheme for new curtains in the Palace

  5. During the Victorian era, window treatments were typically dark coloured due to coloured fabrics being very expensive. Dull variations of navy blue, dark brown, burgundy and green were the typical colours of Victorian drapes
