Severn Hospice is a local charity dedicated to offering specialist care to people with life threatening illnesses
The charity operates from three sites:-
The team includes physiotherapists, social workers and counsellors, occupational therapists and complementary therapists to ensure that every need of both the patient and their family can be met.
Since the Hospice welcomed its first patient in 1989, over 13,000 people have benefited from its care - more than the entire population of Newport. About half of in-patients go home after a short stay, helped by staff whose expertise lies in controlling symptoms of a terminal illness.
Visitors frequently comment on the homely atmosphere at Severn Hospice. One Shropshire patient remarked:
"From the moment I arrived, it was like being wrapped in a soft warm cuddly blanket. I was able to relax and felt the weight of all my problems just evaporate."
Severn Hospice is not part of the NHS and has to raise over two thirds of its running costs through voluntary support. This is achieved by support from local businesses, the hard work and enthusiasm of the general public (from making donations to leaving a legacy in a will, from car boot sales to concerts and balls), the efforts of charity support groups who organise fundraising events, the Hospice Lottery, the Hospice Shops and generous charitable donations from other sources.
For every £1 donated to the Hospice, 92p is spent on patient care in the local area, so every penny really does make a difference.
