Joel walked away from a successful stand-up career in Las Vegas to live on a narrowboat in the UK. It was the start of an unpredictable journey that became his life and his comedy.
You may have seen Joel featured on Channel 4’s series Narrow Escapes. His story has captured audiences across the country, and now he’s bringing it to Sudbury. On Friday 3rd October, Angry Boater docks at the Quay Theatre for one night only.
Angry Boater is not your usual stand-up show. It’s a mix of sharp comedy, storytelling and honest reflections about chasing dreams, leaving the familiar behind and floating into the unknown.
Joel shares the highs and lows of life on the waterways. From meeting one of the biggest rock bands in the world, to an awkward encounter with an A-list celebrity in a boatyard, to the day he discovered a body in a lock on the River Soar.
Expect comedy, but also expect something raw and real.
Before stepping aboard, Joel had a big plan. He wanted to become the first Brit to perform stand-up in all 50 US states. He managed 40. He played everywhere from redneck bars in the Deep South to casinos and theatres in Las Vegas. Along the way, he worked with comedy heroes, including the late Robin Williams.
That’s not a bad CV. But then he decided to swap the bright lights of Vegas for the quieter, if slightly unpredictable, life of a narrowboater.
Channel 4 picked up on his story, following his adventures as he travelled by boat between gigs in London and the Midlands. By series two, he had taken his biggest risk yet, steering his narrowboat out to sea.
Over the past 12 years, Angry Boater has built a reputation for being unlike any other comedy show. It is smart, funny and original, and every performance is shaped by Joel’s own experiences.
It’s a show about the joys and frustrations of narrowboat life. It’s about freedom and the price you pay for it. It’s about letting go of everything you know to find something new.
And it’s told by a man who has lived it all.
Joel Sanders brings Angry Boater to Sudbury’s Quay Theatre on Friday 3rd October.
If you want an evening of comedy that is a little different, this is it. A mix of laughter, stories and real-life adventure, all delivered by a comedian who swapped the suburbs for the canals.
