The first time dog owner

Many years ago when I was a small girl I was chased and bitten by a dog, since then I have always been scared of dogs. In fact I couldn't understand the affection some people displayed towards these vicious, noisy, smelly, dirty creatures.

Fast forward some years and much to my dismay both my daughter and my husband are dog lovers and try to persuade me that the family "needs" a dog. I resolutely hold out, but then last November after giving it lots of thought I agree to going to look at some dogs.

We decided early on to take a rescue dog in, and with this in mind headed to a Dogs Trust rehoming centre. The amount and variety of dogs up for adoption was amazing, small dogs, large dogs, old dogs, young dogs, pedigrees, cross breeds etc. After many visits we found Flo - a one year old female Jack Russell.

Initially it was strange having this little white ball of energy in the house, but as she got to know us and we her things settled down. She settled very quickly -no whimpering at night, house trained after three days and has never been destructive.

Flo has been a joy and brought much fun and happiness to our home, she is always happy and friendly and shows real delight when you step through the door after a hard day at work.

Adopting Flo was the best decision as a family we have made. Having a dog is a big responsibility and takes a lot of commitment but the advantages are tremendous and so is the fun!
