Secure future agreed for Beacon Barracks, MoD Stafford

Military bosses in Stafford have been told the future of the town’s MoD base is secure after defence chiefs confirmed additional troops will be stationed there.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox said the Beaconside base will become home to two additional signal regiments of 1,200 troops in addition to the units already based there.

The move will bring an extra 600 new families to the town. The 1 Signal Brigade, currently based near Gloucester, will be moving to the former RAF camp, which is home to more than 800 military personnel and 450 civilians.

Dr Fox confirmed in his long-awaited bases review that MoD Stafford will become home for two additional regiments between 2015 and 2018.Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy said it was fantastic news for the town.

“I am delighted,” he said. “I would also like to thank the representatives of our councils and various groups who have worked hard to put the case for our area. In meetings I have had with Dr Fox about this situation he has always listened to what I had to say and I am very grateful for his decision”.
