Whitworth enjoyed its annual Family Fun Day on Sunday 5 July.  Entitled ‘Whitworth by The Sea’ and with a distinctly coastal feel, the Whitworth community donned a knotted hanky and enjoyed a variety of rides, entertainments, competitions and refreshments.

Now in its sixth year, the annual Family Fun Day at the Riverside is organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee.  The event also benefitted from very good weather despite the forecasted showers which thankfully only materialised right at the end of the afternoon.

Attractions on the Riverside car park included funfair rides and games, ice cream and candy floss and five seaside-themed competitions with prizes for the bonniest baby, knobbliest knees, glamorous granny, gorgeous granddad and best gurner, judged by the Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Lynda Barnes.   The winner of the bonniest baby competition was treated to a free portrait photography sitting from local photographer Howard Wilkinson, and the Riverside kindly donated the prizes for the other competitions.  Whitworth’s famous Vale and Healey Band left nobody in any doubt as to why they are multi-award-winning, and there was added fun from a Punch and Judy show and facepainting.  Even Scooby Doo turned up to have his photo taken with the competition winners.

The winner of the town’s Scarecrow Festival was also announced.  The public voted as follows:

Winner: ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ (Orama Avenue)

2nd Place: ‘A Cut Above’ (School Terrace)

3rd place (joint winner): ‘Rasta Crow’ (Princess Street)

3rd place (joint winner): ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf’ (St Bartholomew’s Primary)

Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, says: “We had a great day and thanks are offered to everyone who came along and joined in the fun, and to everyone involved in the event’s organisation.  Roll on 2016!”
