Tie knots in your hankies and slap on the suncream as - for one day only - Whitworth will be beside the seaside. ‘Whitworth By The Sea’ returns with another afternoon of fun, frolics and general daftness on Sunday 6 July 2014.

The annual Family Fun Day at the Riverside is organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee and, despite being just about as far inland as you could hope to be in England, the event will have a distinctly coastal feel to it.

All the fun of a day at the beach will be available on the Riverside car park.  Attractions will include funfair rides such as bouncy castles and trampolines, there will be sticks of rock, burgers and ice cream, and there will also be a number of seaside-themed competitions with prizes for the knobbliest knees, most glamorous granny and the best gurner on the day.   Whitworth’s famous Vale and Healey Band will be on hand to play lots of traditional seaside tunes, and the kids (and the big kids) can have their face painted.  There will even be a visit from a mermaid and a pirate!

Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the organising Committee, says: “The Family Fun Day has been a staple event in the Whitworth calendar for five years now, and the seaside theme went down so well that the Committee was keen to give it another go in 2014.  We can’t guarantee the weather but we can offer fun seaside-themed activities for all the family.”

So why not grab the kids and head for ‘the beach’!  The ‘Whitworth By The Sea’ Family Fun Day takes place on Sunday 6 July, 12 noon until 4pm, on the Riverside (Civic Hall) car park, Whitworth, OL12 8DP.  Entry is a nominal 1p, with small charges for some rides.  For more information, please contact the Riverside on 01706 854130.
