Scarecrow Festival - entry deadline this Friday, please enter!

The deadline for entry to the Whitworth Scarecrow Festival is THIS FRIDAY (7 June).  This is when we need your entry form returned so that we can start to put together the official trail map (there’s not much point in you making a fantastic Scarecrow display if no-one knows about it)!  Please, please consider taking part if you can.

Entry costs just £1 this year, which covers admin costs, and the trail map will be live online from 22 June and available free of charge from various local outlets from the same date.  The scarecrows will be displayed from Saturday 29 June – Sunday 7 July.

The last two years have been fantastic and it will be brilliant to see Whitworth decked out with all manner of scarecrows again this year.  If you’re struggling for inspiration, don’t sweat it – it can be as simple or as intricate as you like.  Even if you make a small one and stick it in your front window, it’s the taking part that counts.  If you need some ideas, consider the following:

-          Whitworth Sports Festival – how about someone taking part in a sporting activity?

-          Our beautiful countryside – no-one said it has to be a person, why not a scare-sheep or a scare-cow?

-          We’re currently in the Chinese Year of the Snake – how about a slithery scarecrow?

-          The Family Fun Day has a seaside theme this year – why not piggyback this theme for your scarecrow?

-          Whitworth’s Rushcart is also coming up – perhaps you could link in to this?

-          How about your favourite band or TV character or show?  What about a scarecrow Harry Styles from One Direction, or perhaps all of 1-D if you’re feeling adventurous?  Maybe a scarecrow version of Harry Hill, Philip and Holly or Strictly Come Dancing?  I’m sure someone must be able to do a fab Simon Cowell...

-          Prince William and Princess Kate’s baby is due in July, and the Queen has just celebrated 60 years since her Coronation – how about a Royal themed display?

-          Or, if none of these ideas grab you, you could always just opt for a traditional scarecrow.

It really doesn’t matter how professional or complex your display is, it’s the taking part that matters and we’re really keen to see as many people as possible participate.  You might be a home-owner, a business owner or a member of a group or organisation – all are welcome to take part.  And it doesn’t matter if you’re slightly off the beaten track – if you’re on the trail map people will find you.  In fact part of the fun of the Festival is locating the scarecrows and visiting parts of our fantastic town that you’ve never been to before.

The application form is attached here, and you can drop it off at any of the locations listed on the form, or email it back to me here at the office and drop your money in when you can.  If you need any more info please do get in touch – tel 01706 852018 / emailinfo@whitworth.gov.uk.
