The afternoon began with a procession along Market Street in Whitworth from the junction with North Street; the procession was, as always, led by Whitworth’s famous Vale and Healey Brass Band and those processing included fellow Town Councillors, members of the town’s Guides, visiting civic dignitaries including the Mayor of Rossendale, friends and family of the Mayor and Consort and members of the public.

The procession completed its journey at St Bartholomew’s Church on Whitworth Rake, where bells rang out as the guests arrived and the service was led by Mayoral Chaplain, Rev Lyn Woodall.  The service featured the lighting of a candle by the Mayor’s close friend, Donna Sharp, and a Bible reading by daughter Gillian.  Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jim Mellor, read the General Intercessions, and the Mayor herself made a speech.  The Head Girls and Boy from Whitworth Community High School, Amy Burton, Sian Howells and Declan Young, were on hand to distribute the orders of service, and the afternoon finished with teas, coffees and a selection of delicious cakes provided by local lady Andrea Butterworth.

The Mayor said: “It really was a wonderful day – we had fantastic weather, which always helps, and Whitworth looked its best.  The service was spot on and we were delighted to see so many people in attendance.  It was a great start to our Mayoral year and we’re now looking forward to enjoying the year ahead.”
