A cracking day had by all at Whitworth’s New Year’s Day Duck Race

The annual Whitworth New Year’s Day Duck Race was again a fantastic success. A staple in the Whitworth events calendar, the ducks took to the icy waters at Cowm Reservoir in truly awful weather conditions on New Year’s Day. In total, 975 ducks were sponsored and around 200 people turned out on the day, far more than expected given the horrendous rain and wind. The sponsor of the winning duck won £75, with second and third prizes issued of £50 and £25 respectively.

The ducks were launched by Whitworth Councillor David Chorlton, Chair of the Tourism and Leisure Committee with support from volunteer Alan Douglas.

The Duck Race is organised jointly between Whitworth Town Council’s Tourism and Leisure Committee and CLAW (the Community Leisure Association of Whitworth), and all proceeds are ploughed back into tourism and leisure events for the town organised by the two organisations.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, you ‘sponsor’ a numbered yellow rubber duck for £1.00, which is then entered into the Duck Race.
