The number of people across Newmarket claiming Jobseeker's Allowance has fallen over 2010 compared with the previous 12 months.

Figures compiled by the Office for National Statistics have shown the number of local people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance fell in both Cambridge and Newmarket last month, bucking a national trend that has recently shown the largest rise for almost 21 years.

Newmarket and Cambridge continue to progress quickly out of recession and offer new business opportunities, despite a recent drop in the number of new jobs across the Eastern region as a whole.

John Bridge from the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce commented: “For the UK overall, the figures for the three months to June were positive and better-than-expected.

“Employment is higher while unemployment and inactivity are both lower, and it is certainly a positive sign to see that the number of claimants of jobseeker’s allowance in Cambridge and the surrounding areas saw a dip in the figures in the year to July 2010.”
