Plans to convert a local laundrette, next to convenience store, Costcutter in Newmarket have fallen foul of the local residents, who do not want the supermarket giants to move in.

Locals are concerned of a resurgence of anti-social problems they had suffered in the past when such a store was present, and that its opening will be the beginning of the end for the local store it plans to overshadow.

There are also concerns of increased traffic congestion as more customers flock in to stock up on their daily goods. Raymond Morse, who lives across the road from the proposed store, said: “I am a pensioner and I have trouble crossing that road. Sainsbury’s would make it ten times worse.”

The flip side is that the store would create 25 new jobs in the area; however whether the locals find this to be worth the side effects of the new store remains to be seen!
