Leading UK bookmaker, Paddy Power, has contributed £10,000 towards refurbishment work at Newmarket’s Catholic Church in a sponsorship deal that sees them named on the church’s confessional.

Father Michael Griffin commented: “An enterprising member of our fundraising committee was ringing anyone with vaguely Catholic or Irish connections and spoke to Paddy Power who agreed to make this generous donation.

"I’ve been asked whether the proceeds of gambling are suitable to fund churches, but all churches built around the time this one was, in the 1960s, were funded by football pools, bingo evenings and raffles.”
