Newbury’s best allotment tenants were recognised this week for their cultivation skills and maintenance of plots.
Following allotment inspections by Councillors earlier in the year, Newbury Town Council presented awards to six tenants who were judged to have kept the best allotment plot on each of Newbury’s six sites.
The winners were:
Newbury Town Council also presented a trophy to the tenants of Southby’s Allotments, after they were judged to be the best site overall. The competition was close and Southby’s were judged to be marginally ahead of the other five sites, which were all highly rated.
Cllr David Allen, Deputy Leader of the Council, said, “The standard was extremely high this year and the allotments were such a pleasure to look around. Our tenants must spend a great deal of time and effort on their plots as there was such a variety of produce, together with flowers and well cared for hens.”
Falkland Junior School were also given special recognition with an award for their hard work tending an allotment plot at Wash Common. The children take it in turns in groups each week to dig, sow and look after a number of different varieties of vegetables and flowers. They even have a rather super looking scarecrow to keep the birds at bay.
The trophy was awarded to the school by Councillor David Allen, Deputy Leader of the Council and Councillor David Fenn at the Wash Common allotment site.
Councillor David Allen praised the efforts of the children and thanked Marion Fenn, helper with the children‘s allotment, who said, “The children are so enthusiastic, it really holds their interest and this year has been the best ever.”
