Stopped by the Cathedral to escape the shopping and it was being decorated for the Christmas services. Beautiful building and knowledgeable and helpful staff/volunteers. Well worth a visit

I go to Lichfield Cathedral every Christmas time, although I am not particularly religious I find this building an oasis of calm and peace. I love to spend some time here getting away away from the hectic pace of life during the festive period.
Inside it is magnificent and dates from the 1100s you can feel the history seeping out of the stone walls and I can only gaze in awe at the stone carvings and very beautiful stained glass windows.
Outside the three spires are impressive and are unique. The square the Cathedral is set in is lovely and has a Cathedral shop, Erasmus Darwin museum and good café called Chapters-Steak and Ale pie homemade and delicious!

There are ,I was told by the brilliant guide in the cathedral ,42 and a half ,English cathedrals . I have sung in /visited in my 80 years 33 of them . Lichfield is my favourite visual treat of them all .i felt mentally tickled ,by the stunning Architecture ! My wife and I would never move from our West London home ,but, were we to do so, A house in the Cathedral close at Lichfield would fill the bill. There are four hundred ,FOUR hundred volunteers who keep the Cathedral looking absolutely pristine . As an ' old Soldier ' , I was struck by the fact that every brass memorial was bright ,as if polished today . As a Friend of the British Museum , I have recently visited the Celtic exhibition , so was incredibly excited by the treasures in the Cathedral Chapter House .. ! My joy was increased by the intelligent answers and the profound knowledge of the Cathedral Guides . My wife was working today ,so I look forward to bringing her to see Lichfield Cathedral in the very near future .. The journey from Euston to Lichfield station return cost me less than two packets of cigarettes .. ( and I do not smoke ! ) so, grab your chance and visit this extra-ordinary English gem

The building is truely impressive and so much larger than it looks from the outside. The attendants are knowledgeable but unobtrusive.
The carvings and architecture are stunning and the stained glass windows add to the visual feast.
A wonderful afternoon out in one of the UK's hidden gems.Although free admission a donation is asked for as you leave.
Lichfield city is also worth a wander around as a few quirky interesting shops.
