Winning Words

Lancaster is one of only seven towns chosen to take part in a nationwide project linking poetry and sport to mark the 2012 London Olympics.

And The Dukes will be putting Winning Words into action.

Winning Words is a Forward Arts Foundation project which aims to engage athletes, young people and the public with the power of poetry between May and October.

The Dukes is currently encouraging primary schools throughout the Lancaster, Morecambe and rural district to take part in the project which will see poets working with and inspiring young pupils.

All participating schools will enter five poems on the theme of the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games which will be shortlisted by The Dukes in partnership with Litfest.

The winning poem will then form part of a piece of permanent public art which will be formally unveiled at a location in Lancaster on National Poetry Day, October 6.

A week-long exhibition of all the poems submitted for the project will also take place in The Dukes gallery.

Any primary schools wishing to take part in the Winning Words project should contact Guy Christiansen on 01524 598516 or email creativelearning@dukes-lancaster.org
