The National Three Peaks Challenge – 23rd June 2012

On 23rd June 2012 thebestof Lancaster and John Manley of local Morecambe Company Building Plan Services Ltd are leading a team to take on The National Three Peaks Challenge all in aid of a local charity -  CancerCare of Lancaster.

What is it?

The National Three Peaks walk is a challenge to walk the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in a 24 or 36 hour period.

Scafell Pike (978m), Ben Nevis (1344m) and Snowden (1085m) represent a challenge that involves a little under 26 miles of walking and just less than 10,000 feet of climbing. This in itself is not a difficult task for someone who is reasonably fit but there are 450 miles of travelling between the first and last peak!

When is it?

The weekend of 23rd June has been earmarked for us to undertake the challenge because it is the closest week-end to the longest day and only three days after a full moon (not that you have to be mad to do this but it helps). This mean that in Scotland there is as little as 4 hours of darkness during that 24 hour period.

Who can join?

Everybody is welcome to join, but it is important to get numbers firmed up well in advance in order to organise transport, drivers and back up requirements.

What is it for?

At the end of the day it is a, reputedly, very nice walk! But it is also a great opportunity to raise funds for charity whilst walking yourself fit at the same time.

The local charity that will benefit is CancerCare of Lancaster. If 20 people could each raise £500 that would bring in £10,000 for a worthwhile local charity. Now that IS a challenge and one that would make a significant difference to any charity!

Don’t fancy the walk?

With a maximum of 4 walkers per car, if 20 people take the challenge – we already have 22 provisionally prepared to commit - we will need 5 cars and drivers to offer their time and vehicles to get the team from Lancaster/Morecambe around the three peaks and back again.
