The BFG – Opening night, Friday 25th November 2011.

By Roald Dahl, and adapted by David Wood

The Dukes, Lancaster

Reviewed by P Morgan (2011)

We arrived at the Dukes on a cold night to the warmest of welcomes. There laid before us we were glasses of Frobscottle and snozzcumbers for the children, and (thankfully) wine for the grown-ups. Everyone there was in good form and genuinely excited about seeing the show, and rightly too! This was to be performed by an impressive cast with equally impressive résumé’s from stage and the small screen.

For those who don’t know The BFG is one of Roald Dahl most popular children’s stories that follows the adventures of Sophie (played by Rachel Drazek), a little girl who lives in an orphanage who accidently witnesses a giant, The BFG (played by Robert Pickavance), blowing dreams into children’s bedrooms.

However the secret must not come out and The BFG takes her off to Giant Land. From there the adventures really begin with plenty of excitement along the way that takes them from avoiding being eaten by the other giants, Childchewer, Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater and Bonecruncher in Giant Land, to Buckingham Palace and the Queen of England!

Their exploits were brought stunningly to life with great use of fine puppetry, fantastic costumes and exaggerated masks.

I know this is an old cliché but there really was something for everyone. My five year old daughter was in fits of laughter as were my wife and I (I wonder if the heads of the Army and Air Force really are so entertaining?), together with several other small children who enthusiastically contributed from their seats throughout, much to the delight of all.

A witty and thoroughly enjoyable night, held in the comfort and hospitality of The Dukes.

The BFG really is a must see this Christmas, cleverly directed, with superb performances, in a warm and welcoming family theatre. We’ll be going again before the show ends on January 7th – hope to see you there?
