Sign up for Deafjam

Karaoke with a difference comes to The Dukes next month.

Deafjam is a signed karaoke event which makes music and songs accessible to deaf people and signing accessible to hearing people.

It will be hosted on October 14  by Caroline Parker, a deaf actress and signer extraordinaire.

Caroline can sign any pop song from Bohemian Rhapsody where her mime has been described as stunning and dynamic, to Summer Nights from Grease where she impresses with her ability to switch from a female to male singer in a split second.

She has performed her unique act all over the world and will be appearing in The Round at The Dukes so the audience can experience her special skills close at hand.

If you’d like to get more involved in the evening, you can sign along to one of the tracks on the karaoke machine or prepare a signed performance to a favourite song.

If you want to prepare in advance, you can drop off your track on a CD(with the vocals, not just a backing track) prior to the night so that it can be cued up ready for you.

Please drop off your CD by October 7 clearly labelled with your name, contact details, the track title/number, a copy of the song lyrics clearly typed to The Dukes box office or post it to The Dukes, Moor Lane, Lancaster, LA1 1QE. Please mark your envelope ‘Deafjam.’

Deafjam is part of The Dukes Pub Season to celebrate the theatre’s 40th anniversary. It can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a double bill with one-woman play Hi Vis on October 14.

Tickets for Deafjam are priced £10/£5 or £13 for a Hi Vis combined ticket.  To book, please contact The Dukes box office on 01524 598500 or www.dukes-lancaster.org

Caroline Parker was born deaf into a hearing family and learned sign language and sign-singing when she joined Graeae, an integrated deaf and hearing theatre company.

She regularly appears on television signing along with music videos, even rap.

The Dukes theatre and cinema first opened its doors to the public in autumn 1971.

To mark its 40th anniversary, during October The Dukes is staging a Pub Season featuring two homegrown plays – Two(October 6-October 29) and Hi Vis(October 13-15) – plus a range of complementary touring shows all performed in The Round which will be transformed in to a pub for the month.
