Bold new theatre production that explores love in all its forms, 14-18 July, Bread & Roses Theatre, Clapham

Award-winning theatre initiative ‘Ain’t I A Woman’?’ returns with ‘That Four Letter Word’, a striking new production exploring one of humanity’s most misunderstood concepts: love.

Inspired by bell hooks’s notion that “love is an action, never simply a feeling”, the production challenges romantic myths and asks what it really means to practise love - in our relationships, our choices and ourselves. Set across three contrasting worlds – a museum of memory, a tech boardroom and a couple's bedroom – the production explores the courage, complexity and beauty of loving and being loved. Each story reveals love as something messy, demanding, and deeply human.

In 'Safekeeping', a woman journeys through personal and collective histories, inviting reflection on the objects and memories that shape us. By Nicole Acquah. Directed by Landé Belo. Cast: Woman: Nicole Acquah.

In 'Heat' a couple pass a restless night confronting the strains of change, revealing the difficulty of communicating when words aren’t enough. By Sara Amanda. Directed by Landé Belo. Cast: M: Ebony Skerritt; A: Steven Burrell.

Whilst 'Pivot' brings us into the high-stakes world of two women entrepreneurs, as they debate the future of their dating app and the meaning of love, friendship and self-worth. By Landé Belo. Directed by Landé Belo. Cast: Abiodun Duarte: Trisha Nabalayo. Tolani Monroe: Tunrayo Tomori

Created and directed by Landé Belo, That Four Letter Word centres Black women’s experiences while offering a universal reflection on connection, care, and responsibility.

The performances will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18 July 2026, at The Bread & Roses Theatre, 68 Clapham Manor Street, Clapham, London, SW4 6DZ.

In a time of swipe culture and emotional burnout, That Four Letter Word asks a simple but urgent question: if love is an action, are we brave enough to practise it?
