Usually going to the zoo is not our thing, because we don't like to see animals eke out a miserable existence in a way too small cage.

But this zoo is (mostly) different. It's operating on the premise to provide survival for extremely endangered species. And to see two highly endangered types of bats flying around and eating their fruits from very close was a great experience.

Most animals looked happy and great including the orang utans in their large outside climbing area. The only real downers were the gorillas who didn't look too happy sitting in a plastic environment where their poo was lying around. My daughter pointed out that they had a door leading to their outer cage. But they still looked sad and bored.

The rest of the facilities is great and a lot to see. The staff was also very friendly and answering all the questions we had happily and patiently.

Lovely clean place, lots of animals to see. The lady in the bat cave told us all about the bats which was very interesting. It's a big place and a lot of walking. Very good for children to run around. Lovely picnic areas dotted around the zoo. Toilets are far apart not enough on there but they are clean.

I have been to many zoos and wildlife parks and have rarely got so close to the animals as I did at Durrell - Jersey Zoo.
The site itself is compact, but it has the feel of a much bigger area. We saw some species of animals we never saw anywhere else, and there was something for every age to enjoy.
The feeding time talks are worth listening to, although there are issues with the amplification technology. Also, the keepers are very knowledgeable, but sometimes this means their talks can go on too long and the technical issues with sound can compound this.
The shop has a great range of items at very reasonable prices, and all staff were very friendly and helpful, and are to be commended.
As far as recommended highlights are concerned: the gorillas are impressive; the howler monkeys have to be heard to be believed; the variety of shapes, sizes, and colours in the reptile and amphibian house are fascinating to see; and there is a pair of the cutest, most playful Asian otters I have ever seen - they come within a couple of feet and love to play to the crowd!
This was a day out our whole family thoroughly enjoyed and would wholeheartedly recommend.

A nice family day out. We went when it was raining and it was still lots of fun.

We bought food whilst we were there. Chicken curry was amazing and the burger was good. Would recommend.
