St Leonard’s Pre-school provides early years education for children aged 3 – 4 years living in the community of St Leonard’s in Exeter.

The aim of our Pre-school is to provide a secure, structured and stimulating environment in which to provide children with the opportunity to meet other adults and similar aged children to develop their abilities and interests fully in line with current legislation.  We aim to build on the excellent reputation we have attained over the past forty years and to maintain our unique ‘pre-school’ ethos within the St Leonard’s area.

St Leonard’s Pre-school was originally founded as St Leonard’s Church playgroup nearly forty years ago by mothers who attended  the Church to serve the families of the area. They wanted their three and four years olds to mix and socialize, to learn through play and to be more ready to go on to ‘big school’. Parents fundraised and helped out on the rota as well as employing staff and keeping the accounts. This profile will seem very familiar to many of you and it is, indeed, the essence of our preschool now as it was then.

In 2009 we became independent from the church and relocated to a brand new, purpose built site with large outdoor area at the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education. This has provided us with a wonderful opportunity to forge closer links with St Leonard’ s C of E Primary school and the Royal Academy for Deaf Education. The children have benefited from the closer links, the opportunities for more visits to the school and the sharing of expertise between staff.
