🚫 What Not to Put Down Your Sink This Christmas

The festive season brings great food, full kitchens… and unfortunately, a higher risk of blocked drains. While it’s tempting to rinse everything away during the Christmas rush, a few items can cause serious plumbing problems - and fast.

Here’s what should never go down your sink:

❄️ 1. Cooking Oil & Fat

Turkey fat, roasting juices, and leftover oils might look liquid when hot, but they solidify as they cool, sticking to the inside of your pipes. This is one of the biggest causes of Christmas blockages.

What to do instead:
Let fats cool and scrape them into a container or food waste bin.

🍗 2. Food Scraps

Peelings, stuffing crumbs, gravy lumps - even tiny bits can build up. Over time, these turn into stubborn blockages.

What to do instead:
Wipe plates and pans into the bin before washing.

🍝 3. Pasta, Rice & Bread

These soak up water and expand, clogging pipes like glue. Christmas leftovers? Keep them out of the sink.

🧈 4. Butter & Cream

Rich sauces and dairy-heavy dishes leave greasy residue that clings to pipework.

🍫 5. Chocolate & Dessert Leftovers

Melted chocolate resets into a hard block in cooler pipes. Sticky sweets and icing do the same.

🧽 6. Coffee Grounds

They don’t dissolve - ever. Coffee clumps together in pipes and makes other debris stick even faster.
