The transience of spring

There’s a moment each year — usually just as we’ve grown tired of grey skies and muddy shoes — when something shifts. Almost overnight, blossom appears on branches that looked lifeless only weeks before. Soft pinks, bright whites, delicate petals fluttering against blue skies.

Spring has arrived.

And here in Epsom, we’re incredibly lucky to experience it properly.

From the tree-lined streets near Epsom Downs to the peaceful paths of Nonsuch Park, and the wide open spaces of Horton Country Park, and Ewell Court Park, blossom season transforms our everyday surroundings into something quietly magical.

A Town Framed by Blossom

It’s not just the big parks, either. Wander through residential roads, small green spaces, or around local schools and churches, and you’ll spot cherry trees bursting into life. Patches of daffodils line pathways and roundabouts. Hedges begin to brighten. Lawns look greener.

For a few short weeks, everything feels lighter.

Blossom has a way of stopping us in our tracks. You might notice people slowing down to take photos. Parents lifting children up to touch low branches. Dog walkers pausing a little longer than usual. There’s something about blossom that invites us to pay attention.

The Beauty of Impermanence

And yet, as quickly as it appears, it disappears.

A gust of wind, a spring shower, and petals drift down like confetti. Within days, the branches that looked so full are bare again, quietly moving on to the next stage of growth.

There’s something comforting about that.

Blossom reminds us that not everything beautiful is meant to last forever — and perhaps that’s what makes it special. It asks us to appreciate the moment while it’s here. To look up. To notice. To enjoy the season we’re in.

In busy daily life — school runs, commutes, work deadlines, endless to-do lists — it’s easy to rush past these small seasonal changes. But they’re part of what makes living in a place like Epsom so rewarding. We have space to breathe. We have parks to wander. We have nature woven into everyday life.

Simple Spring Joys on Our Doorstep

You don’t need to travel far to experience it. A short walk after dinner. A coffee enjoyed on a park bench. A Saturday morning stroll across the Downs. Even the view from your own street might surprise you this time of year.

Those bright clusters of daffodils won’t be there for long. The blossom will soon give way to fresh green leaves. Spring itself will quietly roll into summer.

But for now, this is our moment.

And we’re fortunate to live somewhere that allows us to witness it so beautifully.

So next time you spot petals caught in the breeze or sunlight filtering through pale pink branches, pause for a second. Take it in.

It won’t last forever - and that’s exactly why it matters. 🌸
