Manhole collapse: Ewell Village

Message from SCC Highways:

A manhole is collapsing in the carriageway outside the Spring Tavern. The surrounding tarmac is deteriorating as well. Unfortunately, the width of the carriageway is very narrow meaning that vehicles have to drive over the damaged area and we cannot simply install a barrier around the problem.

SCC highways have had a team on-site to see if some form of traffic management can be installed.

Thesite visit has determined the best way to manage the traffic will be to implement a diversion.

In coming to this decision, they have considered:

a heavy-duty plate over the collapsing area, but do not currently have the stock and they have to be craned into place as they are so heavy;
temporary signals to allow one-way working past the pub, but from their experience putting in place temporary signals in such close proximity to the signalled junctions will result in more issues, congestion/grid-lock and a significant number of complaints.

The diversion will allow traffic from Chessington Road to travel north up to the A24 and then back down London Road.

Road Ahead Closed signs will be placed on the south-bound Kingston Road all the way from the A24 roundabout. A south bound hard closure will be put in place at Mill Lane. Residents at the southern end of Kingston Road will still be able to access their properties from London Road by and turning right into Kingston Road at the Spring junction.

The bus companies have been informed.

A team are trying to effect a better solution, but much will depend on who is responsible for the manhole.
