Nestled within the beautiful grounds of Ewell Court House, this much-loved historic building is one of Ewell’s most fascinating landmarks - a place where architecture, heritage, community spirit and resilience all come together.

From its grand Victorian redesign to its remarkable grotto, devastating fire and inspiring restoration, Ewell Court House is far more than just a beautiful local building - it’s a symbol of Ewell’s enduring history.

From Avenue House to Ewell Court House

The origins of Ewell Court House date back to the late 17th century, when a gentleman’s residence known as Avenue House stood on the site. In the late 1800s, John Henry Bridges transformed the property into the impressive red-brick mansion we recognise today, commissioning architect J. Alick Thomas to redesign the house in the fashionable Old English style.

The Bridges family played an important role in the growth of West Ewell, supporting local churches, community events and civic life, while the estate itself became known for its impressive grounds and ornamental landscaping.

The Famous Grotto & Pulhamite Landscape

One of Ewell Court House’s most unique and locally celebrated features is its extraordinary grotto and landscaped gardens.

The estate’s rock gardens, cascades, pools and grotto were created using Pulhamite - a rare Victorian artificial rock material developed by James Pulham & Son. Designed to mimic natural stone, Pulhamite was widely admired for its realism and craftsmanship. At Ewell Court, this created an enchanting landscape of streams, waterfalls, bridges and hidden features that remain a local point of pride today.

The grotto remains one of the area’s hidden gems, cared for by dedicated volunteers including the Ewell Court House Organisation (ECHO), whose work has helped preserve this important piece of local heritage for future generations. Be sure to have a look at special times of the year when the fairies can be seen amongst the foliage.

Saved for the Future

In 2004, Ewell Court House, including its attached grotto, was officially granted Grade II listed status, recognising its architectural and historic importance and offering legal protection for the future.

This was a hugely important milestone, helping ensure the preservation of one of Ewell’s most distinctive historic buildings.

The Devastating Fire of 2013

In December 2013, disaster struck when a major fire tore through Ewell Court House, destroying much of the roof and causing extensive damage to the upper structure. Fifty firefighters battled the blaze for hours, working hard to save as much of the building as possible.

For local residents, it was heartbreaking to see such an important community building so badly damaged.

Thankfully, thanks to its listed status, strong local support and the commitment of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and community groups, the building was painstakingly restored rather than lost.

A Community Victory

Following extensive restoration, Ewell Court House reopened in 2015 - beautifully restored and continuing to serve the local community. Today it remains a thriving venue for:

  • Weddings
  • Community events
  • Adult learning
  • Library services
  • Business facilities
  • Nursery services

Its survival is also a testament to the determination of local residents and organisations such as ECRA and ECHO, who previously helped prevent redevelopment and ensured the site remained a valuable public asset.
