Children Today (Charity) - providing grants for vital, life-changing equipment for children and young people with sickness and disability in Chester and across the UK

Children Today is the charity that raises funds to provide specialised equipment for children and young people with disabilities in Chester and throughout the UK. Our aim is to ensure that every disabled child and young person fulfils their potential and leads an active childhood. With your support we can achieve this.

Children Today was founded in 1994 to help disabled children and young people up to the age of 25 enjoy a better quality of life by providing them with the specialised equipment they need.

Often children and young people with disabilities remain excluded from a lifestyle which other people may take for granted. They want to join in and take part in the same sorts of activities, within their capabilities, as other children. They want to gain more independence from their parents as they get older, but are often prevented from doing so.

We believe the provision of specialised equipment has a direct and immediate impact on a child's quality of life and independence, and is vital in helping them to overcome obstacles and achieve their potential.

Equipment can include:

  • Powered and manual wheelchairs
  • Specialised tricycles
  • Adapted pushchairs
  • Walking aids
  • Sensory equipment
  • Educational toys - specially designed for children with disabilities
  • A wide range of communication aids
  • Adapted car seats
  • Lifting aids to enable movement

An essential piece of equipment can make the world of difference to a child's quality of life, helping in a range of practical, functional and social situations.

Children Today relies totally on voluntary donations, we receive no funding from the government or social services. There is no statutory right for young people with disabilities to be provided with equipment they need by the government or NHS, so we fill that gap. We provide this service for children and young people right up to the age of 25.

Each piece of equipment is gifted to the child concerned, it is not a loan, and it is owned by the child, not their parents or guardians. Our children love that, and they are very proud of their new independence and abilities. We provide ongoing support and the children can come back for further funding as their needs develop or they outgrow their equipment.

The support of companies and individuals in the Chester area is invaluable to us in helping disabled children and young people live a life of greater freedom

With 394,000 disabled people under the age of 16 in the UK, we urgently need you to help us change the lives of disabled children and young people. The specialised equipment that our funding provides means that the lives of many disabled children and young people are significantly improved.

There are so many ways in which you and the people of Chester can help Children Today:

  • Join us on an overseas challenge event
  • Set up a Direct Debit
  • Support us as a Corporate Partner
  • Take one of our home money boxes
  • Carry out a fundraising event in your community

Whatever you do, you will be making a real difference to the lives of children and young people with disabilities.

Children Today has three main aims:

  1. To raise funds to provide grants for special equipment for disabled children and young people
  2. To raise awareness of the difficulties faced by young people and their families in accessing special equipment that will raise the quality of their lives
  3. To inform of the need for better services and provision for children and young people with disabilities

We work hard to ensure that the service we provide for disabled children and their families is as accessible and as wide-ranging as possible.
