Robert Powell to star in Everyman Theatre Birthday Celebrations

Not only is the Everyman Theatre re-opening its doors this week, following a £3 million restoration, but next month the Cheltenham venue will celebrate its 120th birthday.

The theatre was opened on October 1st in 1891 by Lillie Langtry, the most infamous actress of her day and on October 2nd, the theatre will mount a series of Victorian themed events to mark the occasion, culminating in an evening show starring renowned UK actor Robert Powell.

There will be a street party in the afternoon (2pm – 5pm), which will see Regent Street undergo a complete transformation into a Victorian Street Fair.  There will be plenty of free entertainment on offer, including stilt walkers, Morris dancers, music, food and drink, stalls and Punch & Judy.

At 2.30pm, there is a matinee performance in the main house, celebrating the Everyman’s 120 year history and featuring a selection of the kind of shows and entertainment which has been presented at the theatre over the years.  There will be music, some opera, some comedy and, by the magic of theatre, a return performance by Lillie Langtry.  Tickets cost just £5.

In the evening, renowned actor Robert Powell will take to the stage to star in A Victorian Celebration.  Joined by actress Rohan McCollough, Clive Conway (flute) and Christine Croshaw (piano) in a show evoking the triumphs and tragedies, the humour and the pathos of Victorian life, this is an entertaining programme, celebrating a remarkable age with a remarkable monarch.  Tickets cost £15 - £25 plus booking fee, available from the Box Office on 01242 572573 or online at www.everymantheatre.org.uk
