Pregnant with Breech or Transverse Presentation?

How can Webster Technique help you?

Currently approximately 4.6% of all singleton pregnancies develop into breech presentation and the incidence of perinatal mortality with breech presentation is approximately four times that of a vertex presentation. Whilst many breech presentations before 34 weeks will convert spontaneously, few will do so afterwards.

What is the Webster Technique?

Webster technique is a specific chiropractic technique designed to relieve the causes of intrauterine constraint was developed by Dr. Larry Webster in 1978. It has been a highly successful approach in relieving intrauterine constraint and helping to convert breech presentations to cephalic presentations.

What is intrauterine constraint and how do I know if I have it?

Intrauterine constraint is defined as any forces external to the developing foetus that obstruct the normal movement of the foetus. Constraint can prevent the developing foetus from achieving a head down vertex position and a subsequent vaginal birth, resulting in a caesarean section.

So how do you know if you have intrauterine constraint? A breech or transverse presentation makes it extremely likely that you have it, but some women with vertex presentations also have some degree of constraint. Indicators of this include low back pain, “heart burn” or sciatica. If you are unsure, it is worth being checked by a Webster Technique certified chiropractor to find out.

What is Webster Technique?

Performance of the Webster Technique involves analysis of the relationship of the bones of the pelvis, and correction of aberrant biomechanics through the use of a light force chiropractic adjustment of the sacrum (Step 1). It also involves analysis and relief of specific abdominal muscle tension or spasm (Step 2). Both steps are intended to relieve the musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine constraint that may lead to caesarean section delivery.

Webster technique should not be confused with the obstetric procedure of external cephalic version where the foetus is physically manoeuvred into position.
