Bluebirds, Bolt and the Ashes

I've resisted blogging on this but what a week for sport last week culminating in a superb weekend.

Before I dwell on Insane Usain - the aptly named fastest man on the planet - to run that fast is insane...let's just hail the Ashes heroes!

It all started in Cardiff with the incredible match saving performances to bat out the game by England which meant they started the series with a draw not a loss.

There have been exceptional high points and low points (Headingly) but it has been a high octane series that has lived up to the billing.  The afternoon session on Friday for Chris Broad clearly set up yesterday's win but Freddie was not to be outdone with his fielding and the removal of key wicket Ponting was the turning point towards final victory - in Test cricket Freddie will be sorely missed.

Also, congratulations to the Bluebirds - for Cardiff to emphatically win at home again against better opposition in Bristol City suggests our table topping status may not be just an early season fluke.  However, let's not throw our hats in the air just yet there is a long way to go - but we should all purchase a hat to have available just in case for later in the season!!

As an athletics fan I have also followed and thoroughly enjoyed the World Championships.  Six medals for the Brits - excellent plus many PB's and fine performances.  However, as the media will hype - what about Usain Bolt - phenomenal - 19.19 seconds WR for the 200m and 9.58 WR for the 100m - unthinkable, amazing.  He will get quicker - just incredible to destroy the opposition. A true mega-star of the sport.

When I was growing up there was an athlete that was also incredible - one Ed Moses over 400m hurdles.  At one stage he had a run of winning 122 successive races and in his entire career he only failed to win on 6 occasions out of 156 races between 1976 - 1989.  Usain Bolt could be equally untouchable if he is well managed and stays injury free.

The thing about Bolt is the distance he is ahead of everyone else and he would argue that he has not trained that much at 200 this year (due to his car crash injury) and that he was tired and didn't expect to run 19.19...plus his party attitude has lifted the entire sport after years subdued by performance enhancing drug cheats.

I predict that Bolt during his career will run 9.23 for the 100m and 18.81 for the 200m - in a few years time I wonder if I will have under or overestimated his potential!

Anyone else enjoyed the Athletics, the victory over Bristol or the Ashes win?
