After a successful inaugural year in 2009, National Family Week is back! Taking place between 31 May and 6 June, this nationwide celebration of family life in the UK will feature over 5000 events around the country, all designed to encourage families to spend quality time together.

With the Glades’ parent group – Capital Shopping Centres – acting as media sponsor for National Family Week, Bromley’s premier shopping centre is gearing up to play its part, with a whole week of fun including a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, storytelling, family parties and fun sports events. Plus, in conjunction with charitable trust Bromley MyTime, the Glades is once again hosting a programme of free, fun activities for kids throughout half term.

On Bank Holiday Monday, 31 May, families are invited to come into the Glades for a huge Teddy Bears’ Picnic and Bear Hunt, organised by Build-A-Bear Workshop. With life-sized Build-A-Bear mascots Paulette the Rabbit and Bearemy the Bear taking part too, the kids will have a whale of a time, so bring your picnic and a blanket for a family feast between 12.30 and 1.30pm.

Tuesday 1 June will be National Family Week Film Day, with cinemas nationwide showing family movies. At the Glades, Viva La Foto will be offering a Superman simulation DVD package in their studio for wannabe superheroes, young and old. Fun Learning will be running kids’ craft sessions in store between 11am and 1pm on Tuesday 1 June and science fun between the same times on Wednesday 2 June.

National Family Week Story Time will take place on Wednesday 2 June, with professional storytelling at intervals throughout the day and a Storybook Character Fancy Dress Competition at 1.30pm, with a £20 Glades Gift Card for the winner.

All the family can enjoy good, old-fashioned party fun on Friday 4 June with National Family Week Party Day. There will be two parties – one at 1pm and one at 3pm – featuring all-time party favourites such as pass-the-parcel, musical statues and pin the tail on the donkey. Plus there’ll be fabulous entertainment from the Glades’ balloon modeller and face painter.

Saturday 5 June will be National Family Week Sports Day and Bromley MyTime will be running a fun family sports event, including some martial arts. National Family Week culminates with Family Feast Day on Sunday 6 June, encouraging families to eat together. Says Celebrity Chef and National Family Week supporter, Antony Worrall Thompson, “Cooking can be a really fun family activity, and sitting down to eat a meal is a great way for a family to spend quality time together.” To celebrate Family Feast Day, kids will be able to eat for free on 6 June at Belgo, the Glades’ brand-new restaurant (terms and conditions apply).

Also during National Family Week, the Glades will be awarding a fabulous prize package of a £500 Glades Gift Card, a day with the Glades Style Advisor and a family portrait worth £500 from Viva La Foto to the winning family in the Glades Family of the Year Competition. If you think your family, whatever its shape or size, deserves to win – for sticking together through good times and bad, or for making a difference in your neighbourhood – then you can enter by completing a tie-breaker at Customer Services in the Glades or on line at www.theglades.uk.com .
